West Highland Way app - preview of new version

Just a quick post to let you know of some new features that will be in version 1.1 (currently being reviewed by Apple and expected to be released within the next week).

Key changes:

  • 87 accommodation places (hotels, B&Bs, bunkhouses, campsites) now included. I've also added in support / details of sites where "wild camping" is allowed.
  • Clicking on Accommodation details from the itinerary view now displays the details of the accommodation including address, postcode, offline / zoomable location map + buttons to click through to the accommodation owner's website + to phone the hotel / campsite.
  • New "Route Guide" feature that gives an introduction to the West Highland Way + an overall route map showing key towns / stopover points.
  • Updated Train Times and included link to National Rail website.
  • Bag Transfer services now listed - can click through to their websites from within the app or touch the "Call" button to call the bag transfer service.
Of course the app still includes the "Find Me" feature as well as offline maps so you don't have to worry about having a phone/data signal in the Highlands when looking at the maps.

Some screenshots below. Should be out in a few days on iTunes at this page. As always I appreciate any feedback you have and suggestions for the next version. If you prefer email me directly at westhighlandwayapp@gmail.com

Cheers
Chris (West Highland Way App Developer)

West Highland Way iPhone App - out 4th March 2011

If you're a keen walker and looking to do the West Highland Way (a 96 mile walk from the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William) then you might just like The West Highland Way iPhone App I've just developed. Details below. It will be in iTunes store on 4th March 2011.
Do you plan to walk the West Highland Way? This App is for you! The App provides everything you need to plan your walk and to find your way along the route.

- Plan your walk - tell the App which towns you are walking between on each day and the App will create a customised day guide for you complete with detailed and fully zoomable offline maps. It will even tell you how many miles you have to walk!
-
Plan your accommodation. Over 50 hotels and Guest Houses are listed. Add a hotel or lodging to your walk plan by simply checking a list. Vi
ew the websites of the hotels from within the App. When a hotel or lodging is added to your day the phone number of the hotel appears on the itinerary and is click-to-call enabled.

- GPS position finder: Find where you are on the walk and plot your position on a map of the walk.

- Offline maps: Don't worry about trying to get a mobile phone signal in the Highlands - all the maps are included in the App so you don't have to download them when you are out walking.

- Train times: Once you reach Fort William the train times will come in handy for getting back to Glasgow.

- Kit List: Keep track of the kit you are taking with you using the handy kit list feature.

*** Due to the offline maps this app is quite large (80+ Mb). We recommend you download it using a WiFi connection.***

NOTE: Continued use of GPS position finder feature can impact battery life. We recommend you press "Stop tracking" when you've finished finding your position
